As we enter the Lenten season, we continue to find ways to practice our faith despite the COVID pandemic. The Vatican has instructed us to take precautionary measures when distributing ashes on Ash Wednesday, February 17, 2021. St. Angela Merici will uphold the instructions passed down to us by the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
So, what changes will take place to ensure the safe distribution of ashes?- After blessing the ashes with holy water, the presider will address the congregation all at once and say:
“Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return.” Or
“Repent, and believe in the Gospel.”
- Ashes will be sprinkled on the crown of the head rather than the usual cross shape marked on our foreheads. This tradition of sprinkling ashes on the crown of the head has been part of many different cultures from around the world and if we turn to scripture it says, “That day they fasted and wore sackcloth; they sprinkled ashes on their heads and tore their garments” (1 Mac 3:47).
By now, we are no longer strangers to dealing with change or having to adapt our lives to the pandemic that surrounds us. So my prayer for all of us is to accept the change and allow us to be transformed during this Lenten season. Lent is a time to not remain in the same state of life that we are at but to live out the words we hear on Ash Wednesday, “Repent and believe in the Gospel.” How will you embrace the changes in your life to be transformed by God’s mercy? What areas of our life need the merciful touch of God’s love?

- Be a generous giver and give of your abundance to those in need.
- Go for a walk each day with a loved one and talk about life and faith.
